John Griffin Regional Park

Periodic Closures on the Riverwalk

The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District received a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Grant to have the Mile Youth Corps (MHYC) work in John Griffin Regional Park this July and early August.  The MHYC will work to remove dead trees that are on the ground, leaning, or still standing along the Riverwalk Trail and Middle Trail in the park, starting at Reynolds and heading west.  This work will begin on July 13th and conclude on August 6th

Due to the nature of the project, there will be periodic trail closures and alternate routes will be suggested using the three different east-west trails.  There is a significant amount of work to accomplish over the four-week period and the cooperation of the public is very much appreciated.  When you use the Riverwalk Trail System in John Griffin Regional Park, please do not enter areas that are closed, instead use one of the other trails.  Any closures will occur at cross trail sections so you can easily detour around the work area.

The Recreation District thanks GOCO and MHYC for their help in improving and sustaining the beautiful, natural area in John Griffin Regional Park.

John Griffin Park is a natural area located in the central part of Cañon City. The Arkansas Riverwalk Trail loops through the park with the River Trail and the Bluff Trail. The middle trail is an interior trail located in the eastern section of the park. All three trails provide scenic pathways for walking or bicycling. (Horse riders are allowed on the Bluff Trail.) Benches and picnic tables are interspersed throughout the park and provide a resting point to enjoy listening to birds sing or watching the Arkansas River flow by. A series of fitness stations are located along the River Trail for those who want to add calorie burning options to their visit to the park. Interpretive signage along the River Trail identifies wildlife and aquatic life that call the park home.
